Rescue Me ID: 16-11-28-00265Watson (male)

Great Dane Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Adopt the world's smartest dog! (disclaimer - we are only going by what Watson told us about himself and cannot actually guarantee his breed/mix, or IQ) Watson The Braniac is an approx 2 yr old pony/dog mix (or potentially a great dane/weimaraner mix). He was surrendered to a local shelter when he became ill and lost a bunch of weight, according to his former family. He has received some vet care for a possible partial GI blockage, that thankfully did not require surgery, as well as initial treatment for some little friends (tapeworms and fleas, gross) he was kind enough to let live on him. His appetite is back, his coat is looking nice ... (Read More)and glossy and he appears to be starting to regain some of his much needed weight and looks to be on the road to recovery. Watson is a very gentle boy, who loves all people he greets, is not a big barker, and makes himself at home anywhere he can manage to cram his big body. He can often be found sleeping upside down in the middle of the floor at Dog Town, when he feels its naptime. He is good with other dogs, but is a bit intimidated by very pushy dogs, and prefers the company of more polite and/or smaller dogs. Once he gets comfortable with someone he is prone to suddenly turn into a total goofball and suddenly play bow you and try to get you to play. While he is quite gentle for his size, he is definitely big and might knock over smaller kids (and possibly adults, because he is a horse) so he should meet any prospective kids in the home first. Watson has a few special skills and commands. He knows how to sit, lie down, and will give you a ridiculous submissive smile if he feels you have earned it. He appears housebroken, although like most dogs we would expect some accidents as he gets used to a new environment and routine. (Less)

Meet Xena! Despite her strong name this girl is actually quite sweet. Xena was adopted from a local shelter and returned for unknown reasons and was very confused. Luckily she crossed paths with one of our volunteers who fell in love with her goofy looks and long, low rider body and decided she just had to join us at Dog Town Rescue! Although Xena is friendly with other dogs, she is definitely happier with other lower key pups who are not right in her face. We do not know how she is with cats, but could cat test her, if needed. Rescue Me ID: 16-11-07-00176Hextall (male)

Boston Terrier    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

PLEASE READ ON BEFORE CONTACTING ABOUT THIS ADORABLE FACE! Hextall, although a 'Boston' Terrier, is still a cherished Philadelphia (and Dog Town) icon. Hexy is a young, handsome stud at only about 2 years old. He found himself surrendered to ACCT in Philadelphia after an incident in his home with a child. The paperwork paints a general picture of Hexy playing with the daughter in his home, and when she bent down over him, and jumped up and nipped/bit her in the face. At ACCT, he was put on a 10 day bite quarantine, as the city requires for all bites that break skin. This quarantine was particularly traumatizing for a young, anxious dog ... (Read More)who was used to having a home and a family. He was very shut down in his kennel, cowering in the back, surrounded by tons of unfamiliar noises and smells. A Dog Town volunteer (with a soft spot for Boston Terriers) decided to take him home and foster him through the remainder of his bite hold. Hexy was still very nervous, and it took a few days before his foster mom could even really pet him (and even then, she knew there were boundaries involved). After his hold was over, he was taken to Dog Town, where he is doing pretty well with the other dogs. We have discovered he doesn't like to be pet over his head, and we are still completely respecting his boundaries, as he is a nervous dog. Hexy is searching for an understanding adopter, who wants to help him past his 'stranger danger' issues. This means someone who will NOT push him to his limit; respect his boundaries, let him come to you, and don't ever put him in a position where he feels the need to snap. He cannot live with or be around children, as they seem to make him most nervous. He can live with another dog, but slow introductions should be expected. Preferably, anyone who adopts him should be willing to work with a trainer from the beginning, as we want to set Hexy up for success. His most favorite thing in the world is a nice, soft toy, and a good solid tennis ball. He is working on playing 'fetch', and is very smart. He's also crate trained, neutered, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped. Hexy isn't the kind of dog we can snuggle on upon walking in our door, but he has still won our hearts, and we only want the very best for this most handsome buddy <3 For an application, email adoptions@dogtown309.com (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-10-19-00381Cricket (male)

Shar-Pei Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Blind

Ever met one of those dogs that everyone just gravitates towards? If not, you have now! Cricket is a super awesome shar pei who, based on his current condition, has probably seen easier days, but that does not get him down. He would much rather talk about the present. Cricket appears to be blind, so how he found himself as a stray and how far he actually got is anyone's guess. Once he realizes you are there (usually by nudging you with his face and/or bumping into your leg) his little tail immediately gives a quick wag and he gently kisses your hand (and is happy to eat any treats he may find in said hand). Cricket's life on the streets ... (Read More)left his coat a bit sparse and his skin a bit dry, but hopefully some good quality food and supplements will start to heal that right up. He has also gotten a full spa treatment with bath and is already feeling (and smelling) a bit better. Cricket appears to be housebroken, although we would certainly expect he will have a few accidents as he gets used to a new place and schedule, knows some commands (which he is happy to show off to you) and gets along well with other dogs. Anyone looking for a special dog who lives in the moment and is more concerned about quality of time rather than quantity would be lucky to cross paths with Cricket. (Less)

Chihuahua Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Where's Waldo? Right here! While this Waldo may not wear funny glasses, a scarf and a striped shirt he is most certainly confused that he has lost his former family and is anxiously looking for someone to love. Waldo is an estimated 5-7 yr old male chihuahua who was surrendered to a local shelter by his former family. He was clearly overwhelmed by the noise and chaos of a shelter environment and was quite scared in his kennel. Luckily he and one of our volunteers crossed paths at the shelter and the rest, as they say, is history. We just could not leave this poor little guy there one more minute so he hitched a ride with us to Dog ... (Read More)Town where he finds things much more comfortable and to his liking! Waldo is a bit shy for a minute when he meets someone new but if you give him a few moments he is happy to be your new best friend. Waldo also seems to enjoy the presence of other dogs, particularly those his size and speed. Contact us today if you are looking for a sweet, lower key pup to join your family! (Less)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Meet Rufus! Affectionately known as our naked mole rat Rufus is a 6-8 month old pup who found himself at a local shelter when his family was no longer able to properly care for him. Its probably for the best as he had a pretty bad flea infection that caused his skin to be raw, irritated and led to significant hair loss (hence the loving nickname of naked mole rat). Thankfully its a pretty easy fix and he is now free of those nasty unwelcome flea visitors and his skin is slowly healing and his hair is starting to grow back a bit. Rufus is friendly with all people he meets, but does not always know his size so he may be too rough for very ... (Read More)young kids, and loves to play with dogs, particularly those around his same size. He is super into any type of toys and would love to have a family willing to work with him on training to be his best self. Rufus is not yet neutered as the vet wants to give his skin a little time to heal first, but it will be included in his adoption fee. He is microchipped and vaccinated already. Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Mange (Demodectic)

Murray is one of Dog Town's Fourth of July saves. A stray that was brought into the animal intake shelter in Philadelphia, we found this little guy huddled in a small dog cage looking just too sad to leave behind. At just about 4 or 5 months old at the time Murry had a bad case of non contagious mange. He has since recovered completely from the mange and really enjoys romping and playing with other dogs who can handle his rough and tumble style but now around 8 months old it is really time for Murry to find his forever family and settle down. Rescue Me ID: 16-03-27-00197Bruno (male)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Not Good with Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

This ruggedly handsome, wiggle-butt mutt is Bruno- 55 pounds of loyalty and love. Bruno's story begins at ACCT Philadelphia, where he found himself as a stray dog, singing the blues in his kennel until a friend came along. He certainly found a dedicated friend, who after months of visiting him daily, took him into foster care. Bruno spent a couple months in foster care with a pit-mix foster sister, who he got along with beautifully. He seemed an anxious dog, but the lifestyle of his foster just seemed to fit; low foot traffic, plenty of exercise, and an experienced handler. This is where Bruno's amazing personality really shined. He's a ... (Read More)total goofball, who's tail seems to never stop wagging. His affection supply is never-ending, and he's perfectly content with life as long as he's got toys around. They're his absolute favorite! Bruno found himself at Dog Town Rescue when his foster had to make a big move out of state. He fit right into our dog park environment, and quickly won over the hearts of staff members. Soon after, Bruno was adopted by a great family with many young kids. Once settled in their home, it became apparent that they were not the fit for Bruno's anxious energy. They often had unannounced visitors in and out, a busy household, and were not able to offer Bruno the structure he needed. After exhibiting some guarding behaviors with strangers entering the house, it was decided that Bruno should come back to Dog Town by all involved. Since returning, while still the happy boy we know and love, Bruno's anxiety has been apparent. He is only comfortable with certain staff members, which we have accommodated. We felt it best to have Bruno evaluated by a trainer. The trainer recognized Bruno's anxiety, but certainly encouraged us that it is workable, and he can excel in the proper home. We have taken him back for a session, where we worked heavily on a 'place' command which would be useful for visitors coming into a home. Bruno is one smart cookie! He nailed it no problem, and with some consistent training, we are confident he could master it. His training plan involves a lot of desensitizing, and working on recall and focus, even with distractions. Bruno needs a very special adopter that will commit to continuing to work with him. With training, his behaviors can be modified, but also need to be managed for a lifetime. He needs a strong, patient leader, who will fulfill his needs for exercise and structure. Luckily, Bruno is the wiggliest, happiest dog around once he is comfortable with you. His tail can wag a mile a minute, he's affectionate, he LOVES toys, and he has an incredible amount of love to give. While he needs a slow approach when meeting people, his personality is well worth the wait. This boy promises to keep you smiling, and you'll have a loyal friend for life. If you're the right fit for Bruno, we promise that the work is worth the reward. He's a really special dog, who just needs a really special kind of owner. Bruno's adoption fee ($100) will go directly towards a session with the trainer we've been using to work on his behaviors. It covers the whole session, so we can be sure you will start off on the right foot! For more information, email adoptions@dogtown309.com. (Less)
